i saw skywlker, kitty pryde and danny brown at the high noon saloon in madison on april 27th, 2013. we walked in and some cheesey dj was getting started, and he ended up being the dj for the opening mc, who was pretty good, but i don’t remember his name. kitty was hanging out right at the bar when we walked in, and we got to hang around and talk to her for a while. she was really cool and easy to talk to; i asked her a little bit about das racist and the blowjob that danny had received on stage in madison. eventually she ran off to have a cigarette and we joined the crowd. the opening rapper got shit exciting and kitty came on and played a decent amount of material. she was great on stage, although a little harsh on herself. she danced in the front and rapped really well, better than i thought she would and i was expecting her to be good. she played her big tunes, including Orion’s Belt, where she rapped RiFF RAFF’s verse super awesomely, after making a joke about him that i don’t remember. she went off stage and we waited a little bit before skywlker came out and did a killer dj set that should have been way louder. some dude started talking to me about danny brown, asking my favorite songs and shit like that and all the sudden Danny came on stage in a black sweatshirt and destroyed his verses on Jealousy. the show was ridiculous. a few songs in he ripped off the sweatshirt, getting more comfortable and definitely way hotter; the crowd was vicious and sweaty as hell. “my name is Danieeel,” he cackled before breaking into very distinct laughter. Danny easily made his way through his best songs, including some of his greatest verses on other’s tracks. the only song i didn’t get to hear that really bugged me was Die Like a Rockstar,” but i’d seen him play it before. he ended his set with Express Yourself, and a few minutes later, skywlkr came out and dj’d for a while before the place began to clear. i waited around a while, and skywlkr went nuts, not giving a fuck that the place didn’t have the crowd that it had thirty minutes previous. he ended his set and headed back stage, and sure enough, Danny came out to talk with his fans. he sat in a little wooden chair and although he was crowded by people, he went out of his way to shake everyones hand and hung out for a good twenty minutes, answering any questions that got asked and ultimately being the completely cool dude that everyone wishes their favorite rapper to be. kitty and skywlkr came out after a while, and brought danny back behinds stage, and we stumbled out into the cold, still wet with sweat but extremely satisfied with the evening, and anxiously waiting for the next time we’d get to see the same acts again.
